UNODC Anti-Corruption Hub for Africa

The Director, WCO ESA ROCB Josephine Manyasi ‘ndc’(K) joined delegates from Tax and Customs Authorities, including One-Stop Border Posts (OSBP) Managers, Anti-Corruption Agencies, and other Law Enforcement Authorities as relevant such as Immigration Police from the EAC members, EAC Secretariat and other regional partners from East African region in a regional workshop organized by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to discuss strategic approaches to addressing the risk of corruption within Customs.

The regional workshop sought to achieve the following objectives:

1. Discuss the way forward for the Eastern Africa Customs Union to address corruption.

2. Facilitate knowledge exchange among Customs officials on challenges and innovative solutions to curb corruption, particularly in mitigating money laundering and transnational organized crime risks.

3. Deepen understanding of international and regional anti-corruption standards (UNCAC, AUCPCC, EAC Integrity and Anti- Corruption Bill) to harmonize Customs practices with global best practices.

4. Improve Risk Management through sharing of skills to identify, assess, and mitigate corruption risks in Customs operations, particularly in high-risk areas like border posts and ports.

5. Foster cross-border cooperation among EAC members to address transnational organized crime and IFFs facilitated by corruption.
