The 19th Global Meeting of the Regional Entities (GMRE).
The Global Meeting of the Regional Entities is currently ongoing in Brussels, Belgium. The meeting is being held on hybrid format, allowing delegates who were not able to travel to join virtually.
The Director, Capacity Building Directorate, Mr. Taeil Kang, reflected on the WCO theme of this year 2024, “Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose”. He informed the meeting that theme challenges Customs to reaffirm longstanding partnerships and boldly forge new alliances in the face of rapid technological advances, environmental and health crises, and complex geopolitical and economic dynamics. This theme further underscores Custom’s commitment to navigating the evolving landscape of global trade and security by fostering collaborations with both longstanding allies and innovative new partners.
He urged delegates to deepen existing relationships, ensuring they remain robust, relevant, and mutually beneficial. These partnerships will infuse Custom’s efforts with fresh perspectives and innovative solutions, essential to maintaining our role in facilitating global trade and ensuring security.
Mr. Kang recognized the critical roles of Regional Offices for Capacity Building, Regional Intelligence Liaison Offices, Regional Training Centers, Regional Dog Training Centers, and Regional Customs Laboratories, emphasizing the strategic call to action for broadening perspectives, thinking creatively, and embracing innovative approaches within these spheres.
Other opening remarks were delivered by the GMRE Chairperson, Mr Norikazu Kuramoto, Director of Regional Office of Capacity Building (ROCB) Asia/Pacific (A/P). He called on all delegates to engage actively during the meeting, sharing their experiences and expertise.
