Nairobi, Kenya – The World Customs Organization East and Southern Africa (WCO ESA) Management Committee (MC) meeting is currently taking place at the WCO ESA Regional Office for Capacity Building (ROCB) in Nairobi.
WCO ESA Vice-Chairperson, Mr. Vivekanand Ramburun (Mauritius), emphasized the region’s role in implementing the regional strategy, WCO tools, good practices, and the AfCFTA. He called for continued collaboration, a strong new regional strategy, and greater support for regional entities.
ROCB Director, Mr. Larry Liza, provided an update on the development of the new Regional Strategy, highlighting the region’s achievements as it marks 20 years since the establishment of the ROCB.
Attending officials include Mr. Theron Beyers, Deputy Vice-Chair (South Africa); Mrs. Ethel Chitanda, Chairperson of the Finance and Governance Committee (Zimbabwe); and Mr. Thierry Jose Razafindrainony, representing Malagasy Customs virtually.
Discussions focus on implementing the ESA Regional Strategy 2022–2025, developing the 2025–2028 strategy, financial updates, outcomes of key global and regional meetings, and preparations for upcoming ESA meetings. The committee is also discussing the WCO Strategic Plan and its alignment with regional priorities and needs.
The meeting provides a crucial platform for regional collaboration, ensuring alignment on strategic priorities and advancing customs modernization across East and Southern Africa.
